In the context of October, as the month of prevention and information about breast cancer, we present a small tribute to women, who fought against the disease till the end, using art as their weapon.\u00a0<\/span>Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer for women, affecting 1 in 9 women. Let us not forget that prevention always remains the best treatment, as the disease today is curable if detected on time!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

British photographer <\/span> Jo Spence<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is one of the pioneers of phototherapy<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Her radical work in the 1970s explored transformation and role-play techniques, and was one of the first to be associated with gender and identity politics. Her sharp, political and feminist point of view, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1982, turned to the social stereotypes associated with the disease; the female body, but also the failures of the health system. The most important of her projects, Cancer Shock<\/strong> and The Picture of Health<\/strong>, are series of photographs that draw from her personal experiences and reveal the power of phototherapy, as a therapeutic tool for mental health, but also as a means of resistance. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Having hit her mother and her great-grandmother before her, breast cancer was a family affair for the American painter <\/span> Hollis Sigler. <\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/span>In the series Breast Cancer Journal: Walking with the Ghosts of My Grandmothers<\/strong>, more than 100 works document her life with the disease in the form of a diary. Her particular creative idiom borrowed elements from naive and children’s painting, as a reaction to the patriarchal view of women, but also as a way to communicate difficult feelings in an intelligible way. Her painting alludes more than it depicts the challenges of the disease, its effect on the body, often through an atmosphere of desolation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Matuschka<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u2019s<\/strong><\/span> work extends to photography, writing and activism. She became known for her dynamic and bold self-portraits after mastectomy. One of them, Beauty Out of Damage<\/strong>, was the first portrait of its kind that became widely acclaimed, as it became a cover in the New York Times magazine in 1993. It was the first time that a female body image after a mastectomy was widely used, and reasonably has been particularly influential. Its importance lies in the fact that it has strengthened the role of the image and of art by extension, as a tool for raising public awareness, breaking down stereotypes and strengthening prevention efforts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

In fact, LIFE magazine included her in its tribute 100 Photos that changed the world<\/strong>. Matuschka pioneered the women\u2019s activist movement of the early 1990s, and to this day the female body is at the heart of her work. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The diverse French artist <\/span> Prune Nourry <\/strong><\/span><\/a>explores issues of female identity and women’s rights, issues of science and bioethics. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, at a young age, she used her various means of expression (sculpture, video, performance) as a part of her treatment. Her iconic work, The Amazon<\/strong>, a large sculpture, is inspired by the ancient Greek myth and the famous statue of the wounded Amazon, as well as her own personal history of cancer. The face of the Amazon reflects resilience and calm strength, characteristics that the artist identifies with women struggling with the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Most recently, she created a documentary film that chronicles her daily life, dealing with the challenges of illness, treatment and recovery, and the scars they leave on the body. Difficult moments alternate with moments of strength and realization that the most important things in life are health, creativity and love.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Bodice Project<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the USA, is a traveling sculpture exhibition dedicated to the beauty and strength of breast cancer survivors. Every sculpture is the result of the close connection between the artist and the model. The founder<\/span>, Cynthia Fraula-Hahn<\/strong>, made the first sculpture, Ascension<\/strong>, in 2014, plastering the body of a beloved friend with a mastectomy and then painting an allegory of birds and feathers on the plaster bust for the healing process.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n

Many of the works of the Bodice Project are made from unexpected materials. For Battle Gear<\/strong>, inspired by a friend\u2019s battle with the disease, Roselyn Sanders Mendez<\/strong> made a metal armor from kitchen equipment, while Emily Vaughn<\/strong> knitted Mastectomy Venus<\/strong>, inspired by her grandmother, who became ill as a result of exposure to radiation during World War II.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n
